Discover Alentejo

A short drive from the Atlantic beaches (20 min), Verdemar is located just outside the coastal area which gets increasingly busy in high season, allowing you to escape the crowds.

In the opposite direction you will find the vast and scarcely populated Alentejo countryside, perfect for day trips or hiking.

This location between coast and countryside allows for a variety of activities, if you are so inclined.

Doing nothing is also a popular pastime!

At Verdemar there is a swimming pool, library, table tennis table, table football, board games, written information, maps, and a book with descriptions of walks and tours by foot, bicycle or car. For children there is a tree house, swing, football pitch, animals, and lots of nature to explore.

Other popular activities are:

BEACHES & SURFING

A short drive will take you to the Atlantic coast, a Natural Park, with amazing long and wide sandy beaches, little bays, dunes or cliffs, and little sea resorts like Porto Covo, Vila Nova de Milfontes and Zambujeira do Mar.

An extensive area for bird watching, sea fishing, with the best (kite) surfing beaches or just to relax and sunbath.

Surfing has become one of the most popular activities in the last few years and this area has great waves, for both beginners and advanced surfers. We will be happy to point you to the best surfing spots.

Looking for surfing lessons? Our friends at Surfmilfontes are happy to help!

The scarcely populated Alentejo countryside is perfect for day trips or hiking.

WALKING & HIKING

The Alentejo is an absolute must for hikers & birdwatchers. The feeling of space is tremendous, you can walk for hours without seeing another person. Verdemar is surrounded by dirt tracks where there is no traffic, apart from the occasional shepherd with its herd of cows or sheep and lots of nature. Olive trees, orange trees, cork oaks, little streams, rice fields, valleys with corn, nowhere in Europe you can find so much unspoiled nature. A unique flora and wildlife with a huge variety of wildflowers in Spring.

At Verdemar we have a map with a variety of written walks available for the guests, up to 20 miles. You can make your own plan for the day ahead. Most of the walks start in Verdemar, some of them have another starting point (car needed). We also have written car tours.

After an active day you can relax near the fireplace, in the hammock or near the pool and enjoy a nice meal. Best time of the year for walking is February to June, September, and October. Interested in a full hiking arrangement? We have a special hiking packaged deal you can check here!
