Our story

Building our favourite place since 1989

The year was 1989 and Nuno was spending his Summer holidays in Casas Novas, a small village in the Alentejo.

In those times this area was still a very isolated, rural and wild. The beautiful sandy beaches, the fresh fish and seafood and the raw unspoiled nature were what drew Nuno to this place.

A chef and an artist, he was drawn to the landscapes, the cork oaks, the colors and the tastes. You can see these as recurring themes in his paintings.

In Casas Novas there was an old rundown tavern in the village that sold some essential goods and catered to the thirst of agricultural workers. This is the place that Nuno ended up coming up with the idea of building a home for the holidays.

As friends came over to help rebuild, he would cook delicious homely meals for them. More and more people started to come over and slowly but surely the process of becoming a place where they come to enjoy the beautiful & simple things in life was set in motion.

After meeting Christine, an expert in woodwork and restorations, this would turn into a life and family project. Their 2 sons, Tomás & Duarte are now also involved in the family business after having lived abroad for some years.

Together they share their love for the Alentejo, where they grew up; its great food, wines, beaches and nature, with all of those that come to visit.

A perfect destination for a relaxing holiday, we are proud to receive lovers of sun, sea, nature and delicious food from all over the world!

Reading a book under an olive tree while the birds sing, enjoying homemade breakfast in the morning sun, a good conversation, a glass of wine and a delicious meal, a hike along the beautiful jagged coastline or a family day at the beach.

The Alentejo has plenty to offer and at Verdemar we are happy to share our love for the area & the country life.

We spent a couple of days, and we could stay much longer. The place is amazing if you enjoy staying in the middle of nature. No noise and many stars in the sky at night. We stayed in the “Green House”. It’s cozy and small with everything you need also to prepare meals. There’s a nice balcony outside to enjoy the stars. Excellent hospitality. The breakfast served at the house is great and we also had dinner one time prepared by the hosts. Also, great. The place is in the middle of nowhere but just 10 minutes away from local town and 20 minutes from great beaches. 5 points and we will for sure come back one day

A short week stay but already willing to come back. Excellent space where we were able to relax and rest.

The owners do provide everything to make the stay something special. And all the personnel are attentive and extra helpful.

Do take your time to enjoy the dinners. I was amazed every day by the exceptional quality of the daily choice made by the Chef (the owner and son).

If you are looking for an authentic Alentejan experience, Verdemar has everything you want. My girlfriend and I booked for one night during our hiking trip on the Rota Vicentina and we wished we had booked for many more nights. Christine, our host, is most thoughtful, really helpful (picked us up in Cercal as we were on foot), knows her region on the end of her nails and provided insightful tips. She has a way of making everyone comfortable and it makes the experience in Verdemar exceptional. The same can be said of Nuno’s food, which is authentic and hearty yet sophisticated. On a cold November night, we couldn’t ask for more. I have to talk of the breakfast, which was well beyond expectations: a pure delight that sustained us for the better half of a day, with homemade products as well as regional products, both fresh and tasty.

I said Verdemar was a small piece of paradise and I mean it. It feels as you’d dropped out of time, which for me is the true meaning a vacation. For the nature, the country and the animal lovers, Verdemar will make you feel like you are where you ought to be: in paradise lost, and found again.

We enjoyed a wonderful stay with Nuno and Christine. The food is great, both the breakfast and the dinners are prepared with care; we are dealing with a great chef! The ambiance is beautiful, and the rooms are tastefully decorated. Due to the location of the rooms, you have maximum privacy. Verdemar has set out beautiful walks in the area, in addition to the walks of the Rota Vicentina which they also can advise you on. Recommended!
